Ghana have qualified for four of the last five FIFA World Cup 2026 Ghana Preview, they are placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Here is a complete preview of the Black Stars and what to expect.

GHANA'S WORLD CUP HISTORY

Ghana made their World Cup debut in 2006 in Germany and reached the Round of 16. In 2010 in South Africa, they came within a penalty kick of reaching the semifinals before Luis Suárez's infamous handball and Asamoah Gyan's penalty miss. They lost to Uruguay in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals.

That 2010 quarterfinal exit remains the defining moment of modern Ghanaian football. The entire country felt what might have been. Ghana were one kick away from becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal. Morocco eventually did it in 2022.

GHANA'S GROUP

Group L: England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama.

Ghana's group schedule:
MD1: Ghana vs. Panama, June 17, Toronto
MD2: England vs. Ghana, June 23, Boston
MD3: Croatia vs. Ghana, June 27 (venue TBC)

THE PANAMA OPENER

Ghana vs. Panama on June 17 in Toronto is their most winnable group game. Panama are the group's clear underdog. Ghana are expected to win this game and start with three points. A win here gives Ghana a platform to compete for second place.

THE ENGLAND CHALLENGE

England vs. Ghana on June 23 in Boston is the group's most significant game for Ghana. England are one of the tournament favorites. Ghana will need an organized defensive performance and effective counter-attacks to take points. This is not impossible given Ghana's quality in attack.

THE PATH TO ADVANCEMENT

Ghana advancing from Group L requires winning both their winnable games (Panama) and taking at least a draw from Croatia or England. Croatia have quality but Ghana have beaten higher-ranked teams before.

KEY PLAYERS

Ghana's current generation has players spread across European leagues at both top-flight and second-tier levels. The squad's attacking talent tends to be stronger than their defensive organization. Finding the right balance to compete against England and Croatia will be the coach's main challenge.

Thomas Partey was Ghana's midfield engine for years. His fitness and availability for the 2026 tournament will significantly affect their ability to control games.

THE PASSION OF GHANAIAN SUPPORTERS

Ghana brings one of the most passionate and vocal supporter cultures in African football. The Black Stars' large diaspora across North America and Europe means they will have strong crowd support in Toronto and Boston. Cities with significant African immigrant communities will rally behind the Black Stars at viewing parties throughout the group stage.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

Ghana advancing past the group stage would be a positive result. A repeat of their 2010 quarterfinal run would be celebrated as a national achievement. The quality gap between them and England or Croatia is real, but Ghana play with a physical intensity and counter-attacking threat that can trouble any opponent on a given day.
